Aix-en-Provence - Things to do and travel guide
Aix-en-Provence, France

When we dream of travel, we picture the icons: the Eiffel Tower, Times Square, Shibuya Crossing. But some of the world’s most moving experiences happen far from the spotlight, in places most people overlook.

These are the cities that surprise you, slow you down, and make you feel like you’ve uncovered a secret.

We’ll explore five of them: Gjirokastër, Colonia del Sacramento, Hida-Takayama, Mérida, and Aix-en-Provence.

Let’s go beyond the obvious and discover the kind of beauty that stays with you.

Gjirokastër, Albania

Perched in the mountains of southern Albania, Gjirokastër is a city carved in stone. As you walk its steep cobblestone streets, every step echoes with centuries of history. The stone houses, built in the Ottoman style with slate roofs and arched windows, give the city a unique character that feels untouched by time.

Gjirokastër is not a place you stumble into. It’s a destination for travelers seeking stories. From the massive Gjirokastër Castle, where views stretch across the Drino Valley, to the Cold War tunnel hidden beneath the city, there's a deep sense of mystery and memory.

Among the city’s many layers of history is its connection to Enver Hoxha, Albania’s former communist leader. He was born here, and his childhood home has been turned into an ethnographic museum. It's a place where visitors can learn about the country’s 20th-century history and reflect on how the past continues to shape the present. Stories about Hoxha’s regime still echo through the city, often shared by locals who lived through those years. Gjirokastër doesn’t shy away from its complicated past. It invites you to explore it.

Don't miss the traditional Ottoman homes like Zekate House, or the annual folklore festival held within the castle walls. And try the local dishes. Qifqi, rice balls with herbs, is a regional favorite.

Gjirokastër may be quiet, but it sings with history, and you feel it in every stone.
